Featuring the Presentation of the 2008 Judith Lee Stronach Human Rights Award to:
Dean Koh is a leading expert on international law and a prominent advocate of human and civil rights. His accomplishments, which are too numerous to list here, include leading a successful 1993 fight to the Supreme Court to free hundreds of Haitian refugees held in Guantánamo Bay. He has been an outspoken critic of the Bush Administration's policies on torture, the scope of the President's constitutional powers to authorize torture by U.S. officials, and the applicability of the Geneva Conventions to alleged combatants held in U.S. custody. Dean Koh has been invited to speak on human rights and the next Presidential Administration. A full biography of Harold Hongju Koh is available here. More information on the Judith Lee Stronach Human Rights Award is available here We will also be honoring Francisco Soberón, President of the Association for Human Rights, Peru.
Mr. Soberón is the Founder and President of the Asociacion Pro Derechos Humanos (APRODEH), which is dedicated to eradicating human rights abuses and upholding the rule of law in Peru. Mr. Soberón has been a driving force behind the prosecution of former president Alberto Fujimori. The trial of Fujimori, which has made headlines in recent months, is one of the few cases where a former head of state has been tried for his or her role in human rights abuses. Mr. Soberón will speak about the significance of the trial and the joint efforts of CJA and APRODEH to hold other Peruvian perpetrators accountable. A full biography of Mr. Soberón is available here
