CJA ANNOUNCES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Human rights leader Dixon Osburn has been named the new Executive Director of CJA. We are excited to welcome Dixon, an experienced, visionary leader with a lifelong passion for, and commitment to, human rights. Click here to read a press release about Dixon.
Statement from Dixon:
As the incoming Executive Director of the Center for Justice & Accountability, I am honored and thrilled to lead this organization.
CJA is on the cutting edge of international human rights litigation, holding those who torture or commit other grievous crimes accountable.
CJA has successfully filed litigation on behalf of our clients in the United States, and before national courts and international tribunals around the globe from Cambodia to Spain.
We have a daunting task ahead of us to deter torture. There are ½ million torture survivors in the United States and more than 100 million survivors worldwide. Today, we are witnessing torture, extrajudicial killing and or genocide from Syria to the Central African Republican. We must hold those responsible to account.
I am used to a challenge. I helped lead the effort to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," as co-founder and director of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. At Human Rights First, I led efforts to end counterterrorism policies that violate the rule of law, including unlawful detention at Guantanamo, the lethal targeting by drone of suspected terrorists outside of armed conflict, and the use of torture.
I believe that human rights will move inexorably forward like water cascading over the waterfall, but we, the collective we, have to be that force for change. JFK said that peace and progress changes not by a revolution in human behavior but an evolution in human institutions – the way we solve problems. At CJA, we will help the institutions evolve through legal and political advocacy in collaboration with our allies around the globe.
I was drawn to CJA because of its mission, its clients, and its incredibly talented staff, board, pro-bono lawyers, volunteers and supporters. Without you, we could not do what we do. Thank you. I look forward to working with you, and achieving significant victories.
