Celebrating our Victories in the Movement for Global Justice

Please join us for the Center for Justice & Accountability's (CJA) 15th Anniversary Dinner- Celebrating our Victories in the Movement for Global Justice, to be held in San Francisco on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at The Julia Morgan Ballroom.

The reception begins at 6:00 pm and the dinner and awards ceremony start at 7:00 pm.  The event brings together elected officials, judges, leading lawyers, advocates, survivors, and supporters to celebrate important victories secured by CJA and our partners. The Hon. Willie Brown, Jr. will be the evening's Master of Ceremonies.

We will present CJA's 2013 Judith Lee Stronach Human Rights Award to Guatemala Attorney General Dr. Claudia Paz y Paz for her heroic efforts to restore justice in Guatemala. Dr. Paz y Paz is Guatemala's first woman Attorney General and has made unprecedented strides in the prosecution of organized crime, political corruption and human rights. Because of her success in prosecuting criminals who previously thought themselves to be untouchable, she faces threats to her safety.

CJA will present the 2013 Champion of Justice Awards to Robert “Boby” Duval and Ahmed Salah.

Mr. Duval, a former soccer star, is being honored for his long struggle for freedom and human rights in Haiti. Imprisoned, starved and tortured in Haiti's notorious Fort Dimanche prison, Mr. Duval saw hundreds of fellow activists die during protests against the dictatorship of the Duvalier family. He is currently the lead witness in the trial against Jean-Claude Duvalier and has committed himself to securing justice for the victims of the Duvalier regime.

We are honoring Mr. Salah for his heroic commitment to promoting human rights in Egypt. He is Co-Founder of the 6th of April Youth Movement in Egypt, and was one of the tacticians behind a Jan. 25 demonstration in Cairo that touched off Egypt's revolution. Arrested the next morning by Hosni Mubarak's security forces, he was beaten and detained for three days.

The 2012 Partner in Justice Award will be presented to Latham & Wakins because of the firm’s demonstrated commitment to human rights, and history of working with CJA, including serving as pro bono co-counsel in CJA’s historic case Ahmed v Magan in which former Somali Colonel Abdi Aden Magan was found liable for torture, arbitrary detention and cruel treatment.

We will also honor CJA's courageous clients, including Kelvin So, a survivor of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, and Aziz Mohamed Deria, client in the Yousuf v. Samantar case.
